The students at Downtown School were treated to a dance party just before the winter break for their fundraising efforts to help needed families.
Students, staff, and parents all worked together to raise more than $1,000 to benefit the local Ronald McDonald House. Additionally, they collected hundreds of dollars worth of household necessities including food items and cleaning products.
The Ronald McDonald House serves local and out-of-town families who have a hospitalized child in Bakersfield. In 2017 the charitable organization had served more than 350 families who stayed there overnight as well as an additional 220 families who used the day-use facilities. “We could never say thank you enough to Downtown School. This was just an amazing opportunity to expose children and their parents to the mission of the Ronald McDonald House,” said Scarlett Sabin, Director at Bakersfield’s Ronald McDonald House.
The Downtown School focuses on service learning by developing leadership qualities and generosity through helping those who are in need. “One of our mission areas is to give back to our community. As a principal I am so proud of our kids, staff and those who support Downtown School,” said Noreen Barthelmes, Downtown School Principal.
“This really celebrates service above self, giving back to others and making an impact on your community,” said Sabin.
