Reports To: Chief Executive Officer

Summary: The Executive Director is responsible for providing leadership and management for one or more program(s), as well as serving as a senior manager within the chapter. Working in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer and the Board of Trustees (or other volunteer leadership team), the Executive Director will ensure success in, resource development/fundraising, board development, program management, budget and fiscal oversight, supervision of employees, marketing, and general non-profit organization business operations.

Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Southern California (herein referred to as RMHCSC or the Chapter) is located in Los Angeles near several neighboring hospitals. Our mission is to provide comfort, care, and support to children and families in Southern California. To achieve its vision of creating a community where children and their families embrace life and healing with a sense of hope, enthusiasm, and joy, RMHCSC operates six Ronald McDonald Houses, two Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, and Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times.


The Executive Director must be an engaging, thoughtful and effective leader/inspirer/fundraiser for the Pasadena Ronald McDonald House program (and such other programs as may be assigned) and a collaborative, team-contributor within the Chapter and organization.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: (Other duties may be assigned)

Resource Development, Fundraising and Capital Campaign

  • Plan/Direct all annual and major gifts fundraising efforts and achieve results for near, mid and long-term budgets, including corporate, foundation, individual and planned giving.
  • Plan and direct an upcoming capital campaign to build a new, expanded Ronald McDonald House and a new Ronald McDonald Family Room. Organize stellar volunteer and staff teams to begin and complete a multi-million dollar fundraising campaign.
  • Develop and lead a donor advancement plan that encourages donors to consider increased levels of giving & leads to a formal major giving program.
  • Effectively engages board members in fundraising and development.
  • Direct and oversee special events in coordination with volunteers and/or event staff.
  • Work with the CEO and other Executive Directors to identify potential donors for chapter-wide initiatives, or in support of other chapter programs.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of an effective donor database & acknowledgment program.

Board Development

  • Build and maintain a strong and effective local Board of Trustees that can help provide the necessary funding, talent, trusteeship, and support for the individual program.
  • Develop and support a board development strategy/plan that includes identification, recruitment, orientation, training and evaluation of the local Board of Trustees (or other volunteer leadership team)
  • Work closely with the Board Chair to build an effective committee/task force structure that provides opportunities for active engagement by local trustees.
  • Partner with the Board Chair in planning the agenda and materials for the Board meetings and the annual Board planning retreats.
  • Work with the Chief Executive Officer to identify potential Directors for the RMHCSC Chapter Board within the Trustee group and the community at large.

Employee Management & Program Delivery

  • Provide excellent supervision, goal setting and evaluation of all staff and volunteers. Inspire them to achieve to the best of their abilities.
  • Ensure proper hiring and termination procedures as outlined by RMHCSC policies, guidelines and as required by law and oversee any and all coaching and counseling actions.
  • Encourage staff and volunteer development and education.
  • Ensure the delivery of outstanding programs and house operations that are consistent with RMHCSC and Global RMHC standards.

Leadership, Management and Administration

  • Develop and monitor a 3-5 year strategic plan that is consistent with the goals of RMHCSC.
  • Participate as an active, contributing and collaborative member of the RMHCSC Leadership Team.
  • Serve as a team leader for all assigned employees, building a cohesive and collaborative team.
  • Prepare an annual budget that aligns with the organizations' mission, strategic plan, and goals.
  • Oversee the program’s financial performance with on-going budget monitoring.
  • Work with the Chapter Director of Finance and Administration to ensure the establishment and maintenance of sound financial and risk management systems.
  • Demonstrate flexible and efficient time management and ability to prioritize workload.
  • Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations especially as they pertain to nonprofit organizations.
  • Provide a monthly, written, Executive Director's Report to the CEO and at Trustee meetings

Marketing, PR, Communications and Partner Development

  • Develop and implement marketing timeline and communications plans. Manage relations with media in partnership with McDonald’s public relations agency and other media partners. Oversee development of event programs, brochures, flyers and all other publications.
  • Develop strong relationships with assigned McDonald’s Owner/Operators and Partner Hospitals.

Education and Work Experience:

  • Bachelor degree with at least 7 to 10 years’ experience in senior level management, Executive Director or key Development Officer level experience in a nonprofit organization very strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated comparable experience and success in the above listed essential duties, especially: (a) fundraising, major gifs and a capital campaign; (b) developing, leading and maintaining vibrant and effective volunteers (including the Board), staff, and donors; and (c) program management, budget and fiscal oversight and (e) marketing.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • General knowledge and demonstrated experience with office management; knowledge of the organization and operations of administrative programs; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other management staff, employees, and the general public; ability to present facts and recommendations effectively in oral and written form.

Communication/Presentation/Organizational Skills:

  •  Strong communication, presentation, and organizational skills are a must. Established experience with development, sales or sponsorship. Special events and cause-related marketing experience a plus. Must be able to multi-task in a fast paced environment, and be willing to work irregular hours, evenings/weekends, and some holidays, as necessary.*

Language Skills:

  • Read and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Effectively present information and respond to questions

Mathematical and Computer Skills:

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as annual budget needs, discounts, interest, and commissions. Microsoft (Word, Outlook and Excel), Raisers Edge or similar fund development software.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Solve problems with a variety of concrete variables and limited standardization. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
